Q3 Adam Seeley
Audience feedback is a good way for us to see how well our music video met the criteria of the target audience. Its also a good way of reviewing our overall production of the video e.g filming, editing.
A positive we can find from the feedback is that everyone understood the narrative of the video and thought it had a christmasy feel to it which was one of our targets. From the rating system, we can see most people enjoyed the video, scoring it 5, but a ocuple of the audience only gave it a 3, indicating they thought it was okay but nothing special.
One person replied saying the video didnt support the artists image, but in christmasy videos it can be hard to transfer the artists image to the video.

Call me maybe was one of the videos we used for ideas for our video as the song we were doing was a Carly Rae Jepsen one.
We decided to use a Carly Rae Jepsen song as we felt one of our group members resembled her, with both having similar hair colour and style. Carly has quite a clean-cut image, her videos arent sexually provocative, so we
Here I've screen shotted a mid-shot of Carly singing to camera which is a necessity of most music videos
In our own video we've gone with a similar shot, as every music video needs the artist singing to the camera at some point

Evaluation: Q4
-During our research and planning we used YouTube quite a lot to find music videos that we could then analyse to gather ideas for our own. Google Images also played a big part in our research as we had to find out the image of our artist so we would be able to portray them in the correct way. It allowed us to scan through many different images so we got a very clear idea of how they dress and what they look like.
-To create our website we used Wix website design which was simple to use but had its limits, especially with the selection of fonts that you were able to choose from. Photoshop came in handy for both the digipak designing and website designing as we had edit photos that would appear on the website. IMovie is what we used to edit our video, it allowed us to add certain effects such as fade, slow motion and the overlapping of different shots.
-YouTube again was useful when it came to our audience feedback as we were able to upload our music video and this made it easy for people to locate. Blogger has been useful throughout the planning, construction and evaluation as it has meant that we can easily locate posts and our work is neatly set out
-ITunes was also a helpful music site when transferring the song from a file to our music video we had to put the song from our files onto ITunes and then use ITunes to import the song onto our music video so that we could edit to the song.
-Google image was also useful when it came to editing as well as research because three key images we used in our CD digipak we downloaded from google images to be then edited on photoshop without google images it would have been a lot harder to find these images any where else.
-We used a digital still image camera to take pictures of our artist for the front of the CD digipak and the left side sleeve of our CD digipak. The high quality of this camera was very useful when it came to taking the picture of our artist for the front cover because the image was very sharp and focused compared to a low quality camera the focus helped to clearly see the artist as the focus point of the front of our CD digipak.
-Prezi helped with our evaluation it helped us to present our findings on how technology has helped us to create our media product.
-Another technology that helped us was wordle this helped us to identify the most used word in the audience feedback so we could easily recognise what our target audience thought of our final music video.
Evaluation: Q3
Audience feedback is crucial to us as it tells us whether or not we have managed to produce a music video that is suitable for our intended audience. It also tells us if we managed to get the image of the artist right and how well our filming and editing seems to a viewer.
We gathered our audience feedback by creating a questionnaire using three different types of questions to vary the way in which our audience could feedback to us.
Some of the people that filled out our questionnaires were not media students therefore they weren't as critical and might not have seen where improvements may need to be made as easily as media students would.
The decorations let the audience know straight away that it is a Christmas video. |
-The overall response to our music video, "Carly Rae Jepsen's Mittens", is that it has a warm Christmas atmosphere to it and is very entertaining, keeping the audiences attention. We achieved this, by filming around the time the Christmas market in Nottingham was open, so we could have a christmas mise-en-scene created by the decorations that were up.
Example of overlapped shots |
-Our audience noticed that quite a few shots were repeated such as this one shown on the right, therefore they suggested that we could have used more of a variety of shots.
-It's clear from our audience feedback that the narrative is easily understood this is because we made the narrative very simple so it was easy to follow.
-From audience feedback you can see that they thought the beat editing was good but not perfect this is because some shots were extended to fit more singing to the camera in to fit the image of the artist and christmas music videos.
-On one of our audience feedback sheets someone made a comment suggesting that the music video didn't really suit Carly Rae Jepsens image, but that the music video had a christmas image. This is because in most christmas music videos created by artists with famous images, they don't usually tie in with their regular image but instead do have a christmas image and mise-en-scene. This is also reflected in our music video.
Here is a wordle to display the most common words from our audience feedback sheets.
As you can see from the wordle, overall the viewers thought that the music video was good but there were some shots that were repeated. We are aware of this, some of them were intentional but some had been repeated due to lack of usable footage. If we were to improve our video then we would make sure that we had one location where the artist would be singing to camera that we would always be able to go back to between the narrative.

The beginning image of christmas lights is what appears as the image for the music video on our website this imediatly suggests to the audience that the artists latest video is a christmas one.
The same image for the front of the digipak is put on the front of out webpage.
Our digipak and music video have a clear christmas theme throughout them. You can see that they are very related to each as the CD covers main image is of the home that half of the music video is set in and the artist that is on the cover of the digipak is in the music video wearing the same costume both times. When it comes to the website the whole website isn't completely related as we chose to do a christmas song but an artist would not permanently have a christmas website so instead we created the website for the artists normal images and then included images and imformation about the christmas music video and the christmas times that were coming up. Despite the differenc in image between the digipak and music video and the website the target audience still remains the same because of the use of the age of the singer and the way they are represented through mise-en-scene and costume. Also the story line relates to our young teenage audience because it is about a young relationship and they never do adult activities such as drinking alcohol.
This CD cover for Jessica Simpsons christmas single gave us the idea to use a bow to suggest it was a christmas present to show the christmas atmosphere of our product
This CD cover for Ashanti's christmas single also influenced us in the way that they surrounded the artist with christmas decorations to show the christmas mise-en-scene included in the music video.
We were influenced by the style of writing and the way the song listing is presented we felt that the writing had a more personal feel to it.
Selena Gomez's website seems to have the same sort of target audience as ours she is represented as being a fun teenager and also there are fun pictures of her working and social networking sites to keep in contact which is similar to our website.
Miley Cyrus' website is similar to ours because they use a slide show technology to show different pictures of the artists at different places such as posing for a photo or a picture of her new music video also she has a young playfull image.
Some comparisons can be drawn between Carly Rae Jepsens official website and ours such as a twitter feed for contact, latest tour dates, her latest music video and latest single being at the very top of the page.

Evaluation: Q1
'Call Me Maybe' was the video that we initially looked at for inspiration and ideas for our own Carly Rae Jepsen music video.
-We chose to use me as our Carly because I have the same colour and style of hair that she does. Carly normally has quite dark eye make up so we made sure that I wore eye liner to stick to her image. She has a fairly girly image in 'Call Me Maybe' so we decided that I would wear girly clothing such as a dress/skirt or bright colours to portray her image appropriately.
- We knew that having lots of close ups in our video was very important due to the amount that are used not only in 'Call Me Maybe' but in almost every other pop video. This is essential for a pop music video as pop artists are very much about their image so they constantly need to be shown.
Mittens - Image 1 |
- With knowing that close ups were crucial, we got the idea of doing a close up pan of the face from Kate Winslet's -What If video. We feel that it slightly varies the shots rather than just having basic still close ups.
Kate Winslet - What If |
-'Call Me Maybe' is filmed at her house so we decided to use our main location as a house because Carly likes her fans to be able to relate to her videos, so using an normal house makes her seem like an ordinary girl.
-It is constantly going back and forth between performance and narrative.
Mittens - Image 2 |
-By using an ordinary house as one of our locations, we were able to get some warm and cosy shots that Carly's fans would be able to relate to for example: Image 2 near the fire.
Because we chose to create a Christmas music video, we found it quite hard to find videos that were made by females of the same genre that were similar to Carly Rae Jepsen . Therefore, we looked at 'Mistletoe' by Justin Bieber because they are on the same record label and are in the same genre.
-Just as 'Call Me Maybe' does, this video is constantly changing from performance to narrative using one location as the main place for performance.
-'Mistletoe' focuses on the relation ship between a boy and a girl, this is a common theme to use in a pop video so we also chose to use a relationship as our narrative.
-Unlike 'Call Me Maybe', the girl in 'Mistletoe' isn't always smiley and happy and this suits our video more as the lyrics are about missing somebody.
-We took the idea of having the main girl sat alone at a coffee shop from the 'Mistletoe' video because they are normally places you go to to socialize so being on her own would make her seem lonely.
Mittens - Image 3 |
-We chose this particular table as there was a tree with lights on in the background which gave the shot more of a christmas feel.
-We got the idea from 'Mistletoe' about filming memories of a relationship to show happier times to show the difference in the way things are in the present day.
Mittens - Image 4 |
-We made sure that we had plenty of laughter and smiles in the shots where Carly is with her boyfriend to display what she has lost.
We have followed the generic conventions of a Christmas pop music video with having a basic narrative of problems with a relationship. The effects of overlapping different shots is also an editing technique which is popular with christmas videos. This can also be seen in Justin Bieber's 'Mistletoe' video.

Filming
We did some filming in December however, the weather made it very hard to keep the camera steady as it was very cold. Therefore, we are going to re-shoot on Wednesday 9th January so we can get steadier shots.
