Evaluation: Q1

'Call Me Maybe' was the video that we initially looked at for inspiration and ideas for our own Carly Rae Jepsen music video.
-We chose to use me as our Carly because I have the same colour and style of hair that she does. Carly normally has quite dark eye make up so we made sure that I wore eye liner to stick to her image. She has a fairly girly image in 'Call Me Maybe' so we decided that I would wear girly clothing such as a dress/skirt or bright colours to portray her image appropriately.

- We knew that having lots of close ups in our video was very important due to the amount that are used not only in 'Call Me Maybe' but in almost every other pop video. This is essential for a pop music video as pop artists are very much about their image so they constantly need to be shown.

- With knowing that close ups were crucial, we got the idea of doing a close up pan of the face from Kate Winslet's -What If video. We feel that it slightly varies the shots rather than just having basic still close ups.

-'Call Me Maybe' is filmed at her house so we decided to use our main location as a house because Carly likes her fans to be able to relate to her videos, so using an normal house makes her seem like an ordinary girl.
-It is constantly going back and forth between performance and narrative.

-By using an ordinary house as one of our locations, we were able to get some warm and cosy shots that Carly's fans would be able to relate to for example: Image 2 near the fire.

Because we chose to create a Christmas music video, we found it quite hard to find videos that were made by females of the same genre that were similar to Carly Rae Jepsen . Therefore, we looked at 'Mistletoe' by Justin Bieber because they are on the same record label and are in the same genre.
-Just as 'Call Me Maybe' does, this video is constantly changing from performance to narrative using one location as the main place for performance.
-'Mistletoe' focuses on the relation ship between a boy and a girl, this is a common theme to use in a pop video so we also chose to use a relationship as our narrative.

-Unlike 'Call Me Maybe', the girl in 'Mistletoe' isn't always smiley and happy and this suits our video more as the lyrics are about missing somebody.

-We took the idea of having the main girl sat alone at a coffee shop from the 'Mistletoe' video because they are normally places you go to to socialize so being on her own would make her seem lonely.

-We chose this particular table as there was a tree with lights on in the background which gave the shot more of a christmas feel.

-We got the idea from 'Mistletoe' about filming memories of a relationship to show happier times to show the difference in the way things are in the present day.

-We made sure that we had plenty of laughter and smiles in the shots where Carly is with her boyfriend to display what she has lost.

We have followed the generic conventions of a Christmas pop music video with having a basic narrative of problems with a relationship. The effects of overlapping different shots is also an editing technique which is popular with christmas videos. This can also be seen in Justin Bieber's 'Mistletoe' video.
