Simon Summer Homework

Music video analysis

The Beatles are a 60’s rock band and in their music videos they use costume to identify themselves a lot for example in their music video Help they wear black winter coats or jumpers up to their neck which can also be seen in a music performance video of ticket to ride this shows a sort of smart casual dress suggesting a laid back attitude. They are much more softer rock band compared to other rock bands such as AC/DC who are a more rock and roll band. The Beatles over time changed their image into a brighter colourful image when they released Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, in which they are seen on the front cover of the album wearing long bright flamboyant coats they did this to develop “An alter ego band” for there progression from boy rock band to men rock band. Then they started releasing postmodern songs such as “I Am The Walrus” which can’t really be thought of as a song with a narrative because the lyrics are nonsense. In the music videos you see more different editing such as fades but t is all performance based because of the restrictions of music videos in the 60’s. Except the one of video “I Am The Walrus” which was more performance and concept because of the weird nature of the images that appeared around the performers such as men dressed in rabbit costumes. A lot of The Beatles music videos where shot on set of their movies to save money on the cost of a camera crew.

The Beatles - Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Oasis - The Early Years

The Pet Shop Boys - Pet Sounds

The Who - The Kids Are Alright

  • All of these album covers have picture of the artists on them.
  • All of these album covers have clear text showing the name of the artist and the name of their album.
  • All of these albums have an insttutional logo on them except The Whos but it would probably be on the back cover.
  • The track list can clearly be seen on the three with back covers and it would probably also be shown on The Who's.
  • I think the iconography is appropriate for all four because the front pictures seem to fit in with the name of the title for example Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band suggests that that is a big band on the front. Also The Beach Boys Pet Sounds has a picture of them on the front witha goat suggesting a petting zoo.

The idea behind this album cover is that it has pictures of the band on it but also they are positioned in a way to suggest lonliness which is why on the back, I would just have the main singer on his own. Also you can clearly see the name of the band and the name of the album on the album cover back and the CD. You can clearly see the track listing on the back and the appropriate EMI company logo also the barcode. On the inside sleeve I have put a picture of the band rehearsing at Abbey Road Studios for fans f the band to get an inside look at the band. The background colour I would use on this Album is yellow for the bright image The Beatles have and also to contrast with the red and blue text.

I have chosen Fred as a potential performer because he has a standard look about him his hair is in a neutral style and he doesn't have anything that could potentially be distracting in the music video he also dresses quite casual which would be the kind of style I would go for The Beatles Original image.

Potential shooting sites I have decided on are inside my house for the start of the narrative and then on a public park and also on public roads I wouldn't have tog et permission for these but I would have to make sure no passer bys are in any shots. I would use part performance and part narrative but the performance would be in the narrative and would be about a band following a boy around on his way to college.
