Video Analysis (Emily Bland): Kate Winslet - What If

Camera: Shot/Angle/Movement:
- The director uses many close-ups and extreme close ups of Kate Winslet, especially when she is singing so we can see her facial expressions clearly.
- Lots of pull focus is used, this gives a good effect and enhances the feelings of loneliness within the song.
- The camera seems to be moving most of the time, panning her face or circling her when she is stood in the middle of a room.
- The high angle shots used give the impression that Kate is a vulnerable character especially when she is walking down the stairs at 1minute 29seconds.

Mise-en-scene:
- The lighting is fairly dark as this is a sad song so by using dark lighting, a sombre mood is created.
- It is set in an old Victorian house partly because the film that this song features in is A Christmas Carol and partly because Christmas was a major event of the year in the Victorian era.
- Kate is wearing a long black coat as it is
but it is dark because it is reflecting the loneliness that she is feeling.
- Dark colours were used for the set as this is not a happy, feel-good song.

Editing:
Figure 1
- There is a lot of layering of different shots for example: the ghost of the Victorian woman that is walking around the house (see fig.1)
- It has an average shot of 4 seconds, this isn't a fast, or upbeat song therefore the shot lengths are longer than something such as a pop music video.

The layering of different shots would work very well in our video for 'Mittens' as would the extreme close-ups of the artists face as they are singing to camera.
